December Dance Recap

On the swing circuit, the house party has become legendary, and Jaredan's are no exception. Our December Dance was held at his house, with a DJ battle between him at Adin ending in an enthusiastic tie. We welcomed a carload of swing dancers from Nashville, who traveled all the way to Memphis to share the dance floor with us. A few dozen dancers showed up to share some dances, a few stories, and to toast the 2006 swing dances. Don't miss our next dance on January 6th, 2007!

What is a Steal Jam?

Like a regular jam circle, with a couple dancing in the center of a group, but the object is to "steal" one dancer away from the couple, and to keep dancing as long as possible. One person will come from the outer circle to take the hand of one dancer away from the other. The easiest way to do this is usually to break the connection during a spin or turn. After a steal, the new pair will stay in the middle until the next steal attempt.

Some steal jams are to treat a single person, such as the the bride or groom, birthday boy/girl, etc. Our very own Red Hot Lindy Hopper Lauren Warfield was married in December (congratulations, Lauren & Jason!). The reception featured local scene faves the Jim Mahannah Band, who called a steal jam with the bride. Instead of switching both dancers, just one of the dancing couple in the middle will get stolen. Often, two people will try to steal at the same time, resulting in some fierce competition. The unsuccessful dancer returns to the circle and tries to steal again later in the dance.
